CROCODILE CHARLIE

BY

PAT ENGEBRECHT

CROCODILES SMILE, CROCODILES FROWN,

CROCODILES MAKE AN AWFUL SOUND.

WHAT CAN I SAY?  SO WHAT IF I SWAY

THIS WAY AND THAT  AS I SLITHER ABOUT

WITH MY MOUTH OPEN WIDE

LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO EAT

NO, I DON’T WANT A CANDY TREAT.

WE ARE GREEN AND BROWN, DON’T LIVE IN TOWN

BUT DOWN  BY THE SWAMP.

WE BELLOW AT NIGHT TO GIVE YOU A FRIGHT

AND THUMP OUR TAIL TO LET YOU KNOW

WE’RE READY TO GO AT THE DROP OF A HAT

AND THAT IS THAT.

WE ARE NOT ON YOUR GRANDMA’S GOLF COURSES,

WE ARE NOT LIKE YOUR FATHER’S HORSES.

OUR BLOOD IS COLD, AMPHIBIANS I’M TOLD

LIVING ON LAND AND WATER…NO, NOT

LIKE A FURRY  SEA OTTER.

I’M  NOT REALLY SO MEAN AS PEOPLE SEEM

TO THINK I AM.  THEY YELL AND SCREAM

WHICH  REALLY  IS MEAN, CUZ THEY THINK I’M

OUT TO GET ‘EM.

HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF PEOPLE SQUEAL

EVERY TIME THEY SAW YOU ?

MY FEELINGS GET HURT SO I BURY IN DIRT

TO HIDE AND BLINK MY EYES

EVER SO SLOW TO LET THEM KNOW

THAT I SEE ‘EM.

THEY MAKE US THINK TWICE TO EVER BE NICE

CUZ SOME FOLKS JUST WANT OUR SKINS

TO MAKE UP SHOES, TOTES AND SUCH.  IT

JUST DRIVES US NUTS…NO IF, ANDS AND BUTS!

JUST THOUGHT I’D LET YOU KNOW.

WELL, I GOTTA GO, JUST WANTED YOU TO KNOW

AS CROCODILES GO, I’M KINDA NICE.
